Characters
Basic intros/descriptions of the cast! Spoilers ahead!
Main Characters
SCOTT PILGRIM
The main character himself! 23 years old, bassist in the band Sex Bob-Omb. He has a subspace highway going through his head, which is how he meets Ramona. Scott is a loser, but is blissfully unaware of this fact. He's supposedly the "best fighter in the province." Scott is overall a very oblivious person, and seems to skate through life with very few consequences...until he's forced to reckon with the gravity of his past mistakes and experiences self-actualization.
RAMONA FLOWERS
Scott's love interest! Ramona seems like a dream girl, with her dyed hair and supernatural abilities, but it turns out, she's deeply flawed, just like Scott is. Ramona works for Amazon, delivering packages on her rollerblades, and utilizes the subspace highway in Scott's head to quickly get from place to place. She was originally from New York, but moved to Toronto after a mysterious breakup-- avoidance that turns out to be a pattern for her character. Along with Scott, Ramona must choose to face her past instead of running away from it.
Secondary Characters
WALLACE WELLS
Scott's cool gay roommate. He's the one paying the rent, since he actually has a job and cares about Scott (albeit in his own way). The two have known each other since college, when Wallace forcibly inserted himself into Scott's life and became one of his closest friends. Wallace is a bit of a playboy, with a habit of stealing Stacey's boyfriends and sleeping around, but he sticks by Scott's side through thick and thin.
KNIVES CHAU
A 17-year old high schooler, Knives is a self-proclaimed Scottaholic. The two are dating at the beginning of the comic, though Scott leaves Knives for Ramona (after cheating on her). Knives takes this poorly, and tries various strategies to get Scott back, from attacking Ramona to dying her hair to match her. Knives eventually has to accept that Scott isn't the guy for her (and that she's probably too good for him, anyway).
KIM PINE
The drummer of Sex Bob-Omb! She also dated Scott in high school, which ended...pretty poorly for her, but they don't really talk about it. Kim works at a video store with her roommate Hollie, and is overall a fairly jaded and sarcastic character (but she's usually right, given how critical she is of Scott). Kim's character is defined by being ignored and sidelined, always the second choice, despite her relative emotional maturity, in comparison to her friends.
STEPHEN STILLS
The guitarist and main vocalist of Sex Bob-Omb! He's known as the "talent," and is the one who clearly cares the most about the band. Stephen's an anxious person, despite his laid-back appearance, and spends the story in an on-again off-again relationship with Julie Powers. This eventually ends when Stephen realizes that he's gay and starts a relationship with Hollie's roommate, Joseph (who also ends up recording Sex Bob-Omb). He works as a line cook at the Happy Avocado, where Scott ends up getting a job as well.
NEIL NORDEGRAF
Known more often as Young Neil. He lives with Stephen and exists as a pseudo fourth member of Sex Bob-Omb, tagging along to gigs and hanging out at practices. Neil's quiet and largely apathetic, though he's shown to be annoyed with his status as the "kid" of the group, since it makes him feel left out and belittled. He briefly dates Knives, and as he grows up he becomes more bitter and jerkish, though by the end of the story he seems to have mellowed out again, remaining friends with the group.
JULIE POWERS
Julie is a "megabitch" who somehow seems to be friends with everyone. She dates Stephen off and on, despite not seeming to like him very much, and is Ramona's first friend in Toronto. She works at the Second Cup with Stacey and is known for throwing frequent parties. She doesn't like Scott very much (which is warranted), or any of her other friends (which is less warranted). Curses frequently, which is accompanied by in-universe censor bars.
STACEY PILGRIM
Scott's younger sister. She works with Julie at the Second Cup and is gossip buddies with Wallace. She also befriends Ramona, much to Scott's horror. She's more mature than he is, and frequently tries to help him with his problems (that are often his own fault). Overall, she acts as a voice of reason (and moral support) for her older brother!
ENVY ADAMS
Scott's ex (the big one). Formerly known as Natalie, Envy is the frontwoman of The Clash at Demonhead, an up and coming indie band made up of Envy, Todd, and Lynette. Envy used to date Scott in college, and the breakup absolutely crushed him. She became "faker" over the course of their relationship, becoming more obsessed with fame and being cool. Envy's been in a relationship with her bassist, Todd, since they were kids and got back together after she left Scott. However, while Envy is a mean person, we do come to find out that Scott's view of their relationship is slightly skewed.
LISA MILLER
Lisa was friends with Scott and Kim in high school. She visits Toronto for a few months while trying to make it as an actress, and her appearance throws a bit of a wrench into Scott's life. Lisa had one-sided feelings for him during high school, feelings that never really got fully addressed.
The Exes
MATTHEW PATEL
Ramona's first evil ex boyfriend. He dated Ramona in 7th grade for a week. The two worked together to fight off the jocks in their class, with the help of Matthew's mystical powers. Those powers include the ability to summon Demon Hipster Chicks, as well as fireballs. When he fights Scott, he performs a Bollywood-inspired song and dance routine, hinting at his interest in theater which is revealed in the Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime.
LUCAS LEE
Ramona's second evil ex. They dated in early high school, before Lucas got famous. Ramona instantly dropped Lucas when she met Todd, which broke Lucas' heart and led to him joining the league. Now, Lucas is a movie star, acting in mid-tier action movies and running his own skating company. In the comics, he's a fairly nice guy, if a bit of a sellout, though his weakness is his desire to show off his skating skills, which is how Scott eventually defeats him. In other media, Lucas is an overconfident, slightly dense egotist with a fake macho attitude.
TODD INGRAM
Ramona's third evil ex, and Envy's current boyfriend. He's the bassist in The Clash at Demonhead and is a vegan, which means he has supernatural powers. Todd's a complete asshole, cheating on Envy with their drummer, Lynette, and overall having a cocky rockstar attitude with everyone. His duplicitous nature eventually leads to his downfall, when it turns out that he hasn't been keeping up the vegan diet and is stripped of his power by the Vegan Police. Him and Envy were together since childhood, with them taking a short break during the time that Todd dated Ramona. He punched two holes in the moon to "prove his love" to both of them at different times.
ROXIE RICHTER
Ramona's fourth evil ex, and her only ex-girlfriend. The two dated in college, an experience that Ramona writes off as an "experiment." In the comics, the two seem to be on relatively alright terms, with Roxie attempting to warn Ramona to break up with Scott, because she suspects him of cheating with Lisa. Roxie is a half-ninja and is the person who taught Ramona about subspace. She uses her ninja powers to attack Scott through his head. She's also apparently a working artist in her free time.
KEN AND KYLE KATAYANAGI
Ramona's fifth and sixth evil exes. A pair of Japanese twins who were Ramona's TAs in college. They build robots, who fight their battles for them when possible. In the Scott Pilgrim movie, they're also electronic musicians. When they were with Ramona, she played them against each other, dating both of them behind the others back. After they found out, they vowed to always work together and never let anything come between their brotherly relationship. They're some of the more actually evil exes. Besides being assholes, they also kidnap Kim in order to lure Scott to them.
GIDEON GRAVES
Ramona's final and most evil ex. He's a megalomanical CEO/producer who owns a variety of clubs. He has a secret weapon known as the Glow, which weaponizes a person's self-doubt and worst qualities against them, trapping them inside their head. Gideon is a cruel, manipulative control freak, apparently treating his relationship with Ramona like a "science experiment." It's revealed that, throughout the events of the series, Gideon has been using Scott's subspace highway to spy on him and Ramona, as well as mess with some of his memories. Gideon also signs Envy to his label and plans the launch of her solo career, with the final battle between him and Scott happening at the joint debut of her new album and his new club.
